Lake Banyoles carries real Olympic pedigree, having staged the rowing at the 1992 Barcelona Games. The 2025 World Rowing Masters Regatta is held on that same course in Spain from 9 to 13 September, bringing the masters scene to a venue with a place in the sport's history.

This is entry-based, mass-participation rowing rather than elite competition. Crews are grouped by age across the masters categories, so rowers race against contemporaries of broadly similar years on the water that once hosted the world's best.

Clubs travel from across the globe, and the regatta blends serious racing with a strong social side. Rowing a stretch of natural lake with that Olympic backstory gives the event a particular pull for masters crews looking to test themselves somewhere with genuine heritage.
