How it works

Rowing pace is quoted as time per 500m, the split. Split, finish time and distance are tied together by one relationship: split equals time times 500 divided by distance. Give the calculator any two and it returns the third, plus your average boat speed.

Use it to turn a target split into a race time, check what pace a personal best demands, or work out how far you went from a time and a split. It works the same on the erg and on the water.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 500m split?

A split is rowing’s standard pace unit: the time it would take to cover 500 metres at your current speed. A 1:50 split means 500m every 1 minute 50 seconds, whatever the actual race distance.

How do I convert a split to a finish time?

Multiply the split by the distance and divide by 500. A 1:50.0 split (110 seconds) over 2000m is 110 × 2000 ÷ 500 = 440 seconds, or 7:20.0.

Does this work for the erg and on the water?

Yes. Split, time and distance relate the same way on an indoor rower and on the water, so the calculator works for both. For erg power in watts, use the Erg Watts & Pace tool.
