Henley Royal Regatta launches search for new Chief Executive Officer

Henley Royal Regatta is preparing to launch the search for a new Chief Executive Officer, following the departure announcement of its long-standing Secretary and Chief Executive, Daniel Grist, who has stepped down after 36 years with the organisation, including 20 years in the role.

Following Daniel Grist’s announcement, the Committee of Henley Royal Regatta appointed Richard Phelps OLY, the current Chair, as Interim CEO. Phelps will oversee the organisation until a permanent successor is appointed while continuing to serve as Chair of the Committee.

In addition, the Committee has begun developing the requirements for the future CEO role and is looking for an individual with recent C-suite experience at a comparable major sporting or cultural event, alongside a demonstrable track record in innovation, growth, and audience development. The Regatta intends to work with an executive search firm to identify the right candidate to lead the organisation into its next chapter.

Richard Phelps, current Chair of the Committee, will serve as Interim CEO while the search for a permanent successor gets underway.

Commenting on the forthcoming search, Richard Phelps said: “Daniel leaves a remarkable legacy, and his commitment to the Regatta has been instrumental in shaping the organisation we have today. Looking ahead, our immediate focus is on delivering another outstanding Regatta in 2027 and continuing the considered evolution of the event. At the same time, we have an important opportunity to ensure we appoint the right person to lead Henley Royal Regatta into the future.

The Committee has taken this opportunity to review the Chief Executive Officer role and the experience and skills needed to lead the organisation through its next phase of development. We are looking for someone who can build on the Regatta’s established reputation while bringing fresh perspectives and ambition to its future development. We look forward to working with an executive search firm to identify the ideal candidate.”

The appointment will be an important step in ensuring Henley Royal Regatta continues to build on its established reputation while identifying new opportunities for the future, enabling the event to continue thriving for generations to come.
