Oxford Brookes University have instructed the law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper to independently investigate the “behaviour and culture of the coaching” at their boat club, after a so-called ‘toughness sheet’ was leaked online.

In addition to the sheet a message – allegedly from a senior member of staff – was circulated: “…we will track down who shared it and make everyone aware of this person and they will have a period of time away from training…”

The material was shared via WhatsApp and allegedly criticised members of the university rowing team and included comments such as “Put the pies down”, “Get a haircut”, “Lean up”, “Try harder stop asking so many questions please”, “Watching you is like watching paint dry” and “Put your bloody blade in the water. Its [sic] not an oild [sic] painting, it doesn’t need24 hours to dry off each stroke.”

Prior to the university appointing lawyers, British Rowing released a statement saying it was aware of the concerns and was working with the university. The statement ended: “Creating a safe and respectful environment for everyone in the rowing community is our priority.”

The university said it was “appalled” by the content. It hopes the investigation will establish whether any laws had been broken and whether the materials shared online align with its commitment for university life to be “inclusive and respectful”. The university said it would consider whether to take any further steps based on the findings of the report.

Current and recent members (meaning those who have left in the last five years) of the club who want to take part in the investigation have been encouraged to contact the lawyers.
