Issue 33

November | December 2020

You wait all year for international competition, then three come along at once. In this issue we cover all the action from each of the 2020 European Junior, Under 23 and Senior Championships in Belgrade, Duisberg and Poznan. Tom Ransley hears from the Lebanese rowers who, with limited resources, now face the task of rebuilding their national training centre after it was destroyed in the Beirut blast in August. Tom Taylor reports from San Francisco on the region's unique conundrum: train indoors and risk transmitting Covid, train outdoors and risk dangerous smoke inhalation from California's recent forest fires. We hear from the athletes coached by GB Rowing's Jürgen Grobler, who retired at the end of the summer, to the surprise of many, and ask "why walk away now?" Great Britain's Moe Sbihi speaks to Rachel Quarrell about his year so far - perhaps the most peculiar of his career - which has brought isolated training, a new British 2k record and the retirement of his chief coach. We also introduce USRowing's new CEO Amanda Kraus, and hear from Olympic silver medallist Cath Bishop as she lays out her argument for a new competitive mindset, "the long win." Plus more of our usual features, guides and articles from around the world.
