As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, almost every summer rowing regatta around the world has been cancelled or postponed, forcing rowers and scullers to rely on indoor workouts and virtual racing on ergometers to train and stay motivated. Now that many countries are permitting on-water rowing again, with many locations permitting singles only, Nielsen-Kellerman has devised a way for athletes to take part in on-water racing using their SpeedCoach GPS and NK LiNK Logbook App.
They’ve named it the NK SpeedCoach Summer Regatta Series, and it starts this week with the Independence Day World Regatta.
“We know lots of athletes have been training hard indoors for the last four months, but now that summer is here, people would prefer to be out on the water,” says Mattison Crowe, Director of Marketing at Nielsen-Kellerman. “Racing on the water remains a challenge with no organised competitions and the need to maintain social distancing guidelines, so we devised a way for people to race their singles over a variety of distances and compare their results with scullers from all over the world.”
The inaugural event is the Independence Day World Regatta presented by the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia. The race will start on July 1st at 12:00 AM EST and end on July 4th at 11:59 PM EST. Participants will be able to race distances of 1000m, 2000m or both, and there’s no need to travel to Philadelphia to race.
Taking part requires three easy steps:
- Scullers set the defined distance on their SpeedCoach GPS and row the piece in their single within the regatta timeframe on any body of water in the world. They’re free to row it as many times as they wish.
- Then they simply connect their SpeedCoach GPS to the free LiNK Logbook App on their mobile device and upload their results to their LiNK Logbook account.
- Finally, they join the regatta online in the “Compete” section of Logbook and submit their best piece to instantly view their ranking against all other competitors.
There are no entry fees for racing and rowers from anywhere in the world can participate. The NK SpeedCoach Summer Regatta Series has 11 competitions scheduled throughout the months of July and August.
