Owing to Covid-19 restrictions the 2021 Lightweight Boat Races were held on the River Great Ouse in Ely, Cambridgeshire. The women’s competition took place on Tuesday 18th May and the men raced five days later on Sunday 23rd May. Matthew Holland umpired the women’s race and it was Oxford that won the toss and chose the rail side. A tightly fought contest saw both sides take the lead but ultimately it was the light blues that prevailed. Oxford’s lightweight men stopped Cambridge University Boat Club from claiming a win at every Boat Race event this year. At the finish line the Oxford lightweight men had a length of clear water on their opposition and bucked the trend of Oxford crews leaving Ely heavy-hearted.
