Rowing eyewear that wont break the bank

by Benedict Tufnell

Bollé, founded in the small town of Oyonnax, France in 1888, specialise in performance and protective eyewear for sports such as cycling and skiing. Their contour and voodoo models featured here offer polarized lenses and full UV protection in a lightweight package that works well for rowing. And they cost less than you might think too.

Bolle Contour

The Contour is available with four different lens types and at just 21g per pair are possibly the lightest pair of high quality safety glasses around.
They boast Optical Quality 1 lenses, with anti-scratch surface and a non-slip nose bridge including the patented TipGrip arms. Due to the nature of the special polarised and ESP lens treatments, they are however not anti-fogging.

The Contours protect against UV above and beyond the required European standards. Most glasses will protect from UVA and UVB rays from 280nm of light. However Bolle have managed to make the Contour lens protect from 190nm – well into the UVC range.

Bolle Voodoo

The voodoos are specifically design for working outdoors, around water and on bright clear days when damaging blue light is prevalent. It is fairly common for Bolle to take a style that is popular in its sports glasses and then engineer them into a stronger version for safety. This style was first developed for the surfing community and has since been made into a strong FT lens and frame. They come with polarised lenses which are significantly better than normal dark lenses when used around water.

When light reflects off a surface at a low angle it reverberates. As this light enters the eye it disperses, causing glare. The voodoo lenses contain specially aligned crystals which block horizontally polarized light. Acting just like a window blind to allow light through at one angle but not another. These properties make them idea for working on water, and other reflective surfaces. Polarised lenses maintain a 100% UV filter and also block 90% of reflected directional light in additional to 22% of Infrared radiation. Many regard these as the best lens for general use in varying conditions.
